In Australia,

we travel over 230 million kilometres per year on our roads – with over 50,000 motor vehicles on the roads in Queensland alone!

With so many people traveling in motor vehicles, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads – https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ – seeks to educate drivers on how they can ensure their safety, and that of their passengers.

One of the simplest and easiest safety checks you can do is a Queensland registration check. The registration status of a motor vehicle can be directly related to the safety of a vehicle. A rego check can expose potential indications that a vehicle has mechanical issues. For example, if a car has had multiple owners over a short period of time it can indicate a safety issue.

FAQ about QLD rego check

When does my car need a safety certificate? If you have a vehicle registered in another state or that has been un-registered for more than 3 months or are registering the vehicle for the first time – the car needs to pass a safety inspection and receive a Safety Certificate before they can be registered.

If your registration has expired, it is illegal to drive your vehicle until you have paid your registration fee. The registration status of the vehicle will be deemed ‘expired’, meaning the vehicle is unregistered and 30 days after the registration expires the vehicle is considered to be uninsured.

The fine for driving an unregistered vehicle ranges between $292 and $390 depending on the number of cylinders the vehicle has and $487 for driving an uninsured vehicle on the road.

Legally you can’t list your car for sale in Queensland if you do not have the Safety Certificate. The registration office will not allow the new owner to transfer the registration and you will have the person coming back to you asking for their refund.

The time a safety certificate is valid depends on who is selling the vehicle: licensed motor dealers—certificates are valid for 3 months or 1,000km (whichever expires first) from the date of issue. all other sellers—certificates are valid for 2 months or 2,000km (whichever expires first) from the date of issue.

How much is the average cost of a roadworthy? The average price of a road safety certificate in Queensland is between $90 to $100.

Queensland Transport allows 14 days to have all defects rectified. Once the defects have been fixed, back you go for the repairs to be checked. If you don’t get it done within that time frame, your partially finished RWC is canceled and you will need a full inspection – that is, start from scratch.

If your vehicle is unregistered and you need to drive on the road to register it, you cannot legally drive unless you are carrying a CTP insurance certificate. … This will allow you to drive your vehicle to get a safety certificate or certificate of inspection and then to a transport and motoring customer service center.

You now have the option of making smaller, more manageable payments if you choose to renew your registration for a one-month registration period. You can do this by using the direct debit online service where you have the choice of 1, 3, 6 or 12-month registration periods.
